Wike Justifies ₦39bn ICC Renovation, Dismisses Critics as 'Lacking Taste'

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has defended the ₦39 billion spent on the renovation of Abuja's International Conference Centre (ICC), insisting the overhaul was extensive and justified.

Speaking during the commissioning of the Left-Hand Service Carriageway on Friday, Wike explained that while the building’s main structure remained intact, every other component was completely replaced. He noted that though the centre was originally built in 1991 for ₦240 million under then military ruler Ibrahim Babangida, economic realities and inflation have drastically changed since then, validating the current renovation cost.

President Bola Tinubu officially commissioned the renovated ICC on June 10, 2025. The facility was also renamed the Bola Tinubu International Conference Centre. This move sparked criticism from opposition figures, including ex-lawmaker Shehu Sani, who argued that the centre should have been named after Babangida instead.

Responding to critics, Wike said: “Only the blockwork was left untouched. Every other thing was completely redone. Those criticizing this don't have a sense of good taste.” He further defended the renaming, pointing out that several national landmarks bear names of people who did not construct them—citing examples like the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and the Moshood Abiola Stadium.

Wike challenged critics to consider historical changes in the economy, particularly the naira's exchange rate, when comparing costs over time. “What was the exchange rate in 1991 compared to today?” he asked rhetorically.

He added, “We have a vision and high standards for this country. The president has delivered quality, and I am proud to defend him. If you didn’t stand for your leader when you had the chance, that’s your problem. I have no regrets.”

Wike concluded by dismissing claims that the project was a wasteful expense or a misplaced priority.
