Windstorm Wreaks Havoc on Gombe NYSC Camp, Coordinator Calls for Government Help

A severe windstorm recently damaged key infrastructure at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Amada, Akko LGA of Gombe State. The State NYSC Coordinator, Chinwe Nwachuku, has appealed to Governor Muhammadu Yahaya for immediate support to restore the camp.

Speaking during the swearing-in of the 2025 Batch 'A' Stream II corps members on Friday, Nwachuku expressed deep concern about the safety of the camp residents. She noted that the storm, which occurred on Tuesday, tore off the roof of the camp's multipurpose pavilion and severely affected several hostels, leaving some completely exposed to the elements.

She described the pavilion as a central point for camp activities and stressed that its current state poses serious risks. “It’s disheartening that some of the rooms are no longer habitable. My children [corps members] constantly worry about what might happen if it rains,” she added.

Nwachuku urged the state government to provide emergency repairs to ensure the camp is safe and conducive for the corps members. She emphasized that government support would greatly encourage and motivate the young participants.

Despite the challenges, she thanked the governor for his past support and also appreciated the judiciary for its role in administering the oath of allegiance to the new corps members. A total of 1,629 corps members were sworn in — 893 males and 736 females.

In her address to the corps members, Nwachuku advised them to uphold discipline and respect local laws and traditions throughout their service year.

Governor Yahaya, represented by his deputy, Dr. Manassah Jatau, reassured the corps members that their welfare is a priority. He encouraged them to respect cultural differences and to integrate peacefully into their host communities.

The ceremony officially marked the start of the three-week orientation program for corps members assigned to Gombe State.
