Ange Postecoglou has been dismissed as Tottenham Hotspur’s manager, just 16 days after ending the club’s 17-year trophy drought with a historic Europa League triumph.
The Australian coach guided Spurs to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the final in Bilbao, delivering the club’s first European trophy in 41 years and securing a return to the Champions League.
Despite the European success, Postecoglou’s time at the club came to an abrupt end on Friday, as the club pointed to a dismal domestic campaign — their worst in nearly five decades.
In a statement posted on the club’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, Tottenham confirmed:
> “Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties.”
Postecoglou, who joined Spurs exactly two years ago from Celtic, oversaw a turbulent season that ended with the team finishing 17th in the Premier League — narrowly escaping relegation and finishing above only Leicester, Ipswich, and Southampton.
Club chairman Daniel Levy and the board unanimously agreed that a managerial change was necessary.
> “Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph,” the statement added.
Postecoglou’s departure marks the end of a dramatic, rollercoaster tenure in north London — one that delivered long-awaited silverware but also exposed deep-rooted issues on the domestic front.
