Tinubu Orders Probe Into Benue Massacre, Calls for Urgent Peace Talks

President Bola Tinubu has ordered a thorough investigation into the recent mass killings in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, where over 100 people reportedly lost their lives following a brutal attack by armed assailants.
The tragic incident sparked widespread outrage, with angry youths blocking the Lafia-Makurdi highway in protest. Demonstrations also continued into Sunday in the state capital, Makurdi, where police used teargas to disperse the crowd.
Reacting to the violence in a statement posted on his official X handle (formerly Twitter) on Sunday night, Tinubu described the killings as “senseless bloodletting” and declared that “enough is enough.”
The President directed security agencies to take decisive action, arrest and prosecute all those responsible—regardless of their affiliations—and bring the violence to an end.
He also urged Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, to assume a leadership role in fostering peace by initiating dialogue and reconciliation between farmers, herders, and local communities.
> “Political and community leaders in Benue must act responsibly and avoid inflammatory remarks that could further escalate the situation,” Tinubu said.
He charged Governor Alia to lead with statesmanship by building trust and engaging stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the recurring violence in the region.
> “Our people must live in peace, and it is possible when leaders across divides work together in harmony,” he added. “Differences must be resolved with fairness, openness, and justice.”
