Supreme Court Pays Tribute to Late Former CJN Mohammed Uwais

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Justice Mohammed Uwais, a revered legal icon and former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), who died in the early hours of Friday, June 6, 2025.

In a statement released by Dr. Festus Akande, Director of Information and Public Relations for the Supreme Court, the judiciary extended its heartfelt condolences to the late Justice’s family, describing him as a trailblazer in Nigerian legal history.

Justice Uwais, who served as Nigeria’s 9th Chief Justice from 1995 to 2006, was widely celebrated for his integrity, reform-driven leadership, and dedication to upholding the rule of law.

Born on June 12, 1936, in Zaria, Kaduna State, Uwais carved out a distinguished career in the legal profession. He was called to the Bar in 1963 at the Middle Temple in London and quickly gained recognition for his fairness and commitment to justice.

During his tenure as CJN, Justice Uwais spearheaded major judicial reforms, including the establishment of the National Judicial Council (NJC)—a pivotal institution that continues to safeguard the independence and accountability of the Nigerian judiciary.

The Supreme Court’s statement noted that Uwais was also deeply committed to legal education and mentorship, shaping the careers of countless lawyers and judges.

“We honour his tireless dedication to the rule of law and the improvement of the Nigerian judiciary—values for which he will always be remembered,” the statement read.

“Justice Uwais’s legacy of professionalism and unwavering justice will remain a beacon for generations to come. He will be sorely missed by colleagues, mentees, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
