President Tinubu Honours Soyinka, Falana, Shehu Sani, Uba Sani, and Others in National Recognition |
In a historic address to a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced a new list of national honours awarded to distinguished Nigerians across various sectors.
Highlights of the Honours Include:
- Prof. Wole Soyinka, Nobel Laureate and literary icon, received the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) — one of the highest national honours.
- Barrister Femi Falana, SAN, respected human rights lawyer, was awarded the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
- Senator Shehu Sani and Governor Uba Sani also received the CON in recognition of their public service and activism.
- Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, a strong voice in national dialogue, was also conferred with the CON.
- Media leaders such as Dapo Olorunyomi (Publisher of Premium Times), Kunle Ajibade, Nosa Igiebor, and Seye Kehinde received the Order of the Niger (OON) for their role in journalism and advocacy.
Other notable recipients include:
- Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, Chief Frank Kokori, Dr. Edwin Madunagu, and Odia Ofeimun – all honoured with the CON.
- Alhaji Balarabe Musa, Chief Bola Ige, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, and Senator Abu Ibrahim were awarded the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR).
- Ken Saro-Wiwa, the late environmental activist, was posthumously awarded the CON, along with his fellow Ogoni rights activists: Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel, John Kpuine, and others – each receiving the OON.
- Academics and public intellectuals like Prof. Olatunji Dare, Prof. Segun Gbadegesin, and Prof. Julius Ihonvbere were among the recipients of the CON.
This list reflects a wide range of contributions—from activism and journalism to politics, law, and academia—recognizing those who have shaped Nigeria’s progress and democratic journey.
