PDP: Nigeria Must Be Freed from APC’s Tight Grip on Democracy

As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a strong call for unity among citizens and democratic institutions to resist what it describes as the systematic erosion of democratic values under the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

In a statement released by the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the party urged Nigerians, civil society, development partners, and all advocates of democracy to speak out against the suppression of democratic freedoms, disregard for the rule of law, and increasing political repression.

According to the PDP, the APC government is using state institutions to undermine the constitution, silence the opposition, and limit citizens’ rights to participate freely in governance. The party accused the ruling administration of stifling the media, deepening poverty, and pushing the country toward authoritarianism.

Ologunagba pointed to the 2024 Edo Governorship election and the political crisis in Rivers State as examples of what he called “state capture” and constitutional violations. He said the imposition of a Sole Administrator in Rivers State and the subversion of electoral mandates are dangerous signs for the country's democracy.

“June 12 is a powerful reminder of Nigeria’s resistance against oppression and lawlessness,” Ologunagba said. “It represents our collective insistence on justice, fairness, credible elections, and accountable governance—the very principles Chief MKO Abiola stood for and died defending.”

He lamented that the progress made under past PDP governments has been eroded under the APC, which he described as a “Special Purpose Vehicle masquerading as a political party.”

The PDP demanded that the APC administration honor the legacy of Chief Abiola by respecting the rule of law, allowing the independence of democratic institutions such as the National Assembly, INEC, and the judiciary, and ensuring press freedom and credible elections.

The party also called on these institutions to assert their constitutional roles and protect the sovereignty of the Nigerian people.

In conclusion, the PDP congratulated Nigerians on Democracy Day and urged them not to lose faith in the democratic process. It encouraged citizens to remain law-abiding and continue to support the PDP as it prepares to challenge the APC and reclaim leadership in the 2027 elections.
