Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has called for a more meaningful form of democracy in Nigeria—one that goes beyond elections and delivers real change to people’s lives.
In a message commemorating Democracy Day, she paid glowing tribute to late Chief Moshood Abiola and other democracy icons whose sacrifices helped lay the groundwork for Nigeria’s democratic journey.
“June 12 isn’t just a date—it represents our shared fight for true democratic rule,” she said. “It honours the bravery of Chief M.K.O. Abiola and countless other Nigerians who stood up for the people’s voice to be heard.”
While acknowledging that Nigeria has made democratic progress, she stressed that the real test of democracy lies in its ability to improve the lives of everyday Nigerians.
“Democracy must lead to genuine development,” she said. “It should uplift the vulnerable, enforce the rule of law, and uphold the dignity of all Nigerians.”
She encouraged citizens—especially youth and women—to get more involved in the democratic process, saying their voices are vital to shaping a just and inclusive Nigeria.
“I urge everyone to stay involved,” Senator Uduaghan said. “We all have a role to play in building a country that works for every Nigerian—no matter their background.”
Reaffirming her dedication to public service, the Senator pledged to continue pushing for inclusive policies and transparency in governance.
“We must not give up on Nigeria,” she concluded. “Let’s bridge our differences and build a future where democracy is not just an ideal but a lived reality.”
