Plateau Governor Condemns Killing of Eight Travellers, Urges Calm

Governor Caleb Mutfwang has strongly condemned the killing of eight travellers by suspected hoodlums in Mangun community, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The governor made the call for calm during a visit to the scene of the incident on Saturday.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the attack occurred on Friday when hoodlums ambushed a bus carrying 31 passengers — including women and children — who were travelling from Zaria to Qua’an Pan LGA for a wedding. Eight people lost their lives in the tragic incident.

Visibly saddened by the attack, Governor Mutfwang described it as a criminal act and reaffirmed his administration’s zero tolerance for such violence.

“I have reached out to my brother, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, and the Emir of Zazzau to brief them on this unfortunate incident,” Mutfwang said.

“This is not something we take lightly. We completely condemn this act and reiterate that any form of criminality will not be tolerated.”

The governor also used the opportunity to address Plateau’s youth, urging them to remain vigilant and act with wisdom in sensitive situations.

“It’s time for our youth to be wise and responsible. If you come across strangers in your community, report them for proper identification and questioning. Don’t take the law into your own hands,” he advised.

During his visit, the governor also stopped by Mangu General Hospital, where some of the injured travellers are receiving treatment. He pledged to cover all medical expenses for the victims.

He offered condolences to the families of those who lost loved ones and promised to send a government delegation to visit the bereaved families and engage with the Kaduna State Government.

Governor Mutfwang also commended the Mangun community youth leader and security agencies for their swift intervention, which helped save the lives of several victims during the attack.

Reassuring the public of Plateau’s commitment to peace and inclusiveness, the governor called for greater tolerance and mutual trust among residents.

“I want to assure Nigerians that Plateau remains a home for all, regardless of ethnicity or religion,” he said.

Meanwhile, Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Emmanuel Adesina, confirmed that eight people died in the attack.

“Seven victims died on the spot, and one of the injured passed away this morning in the hospital, bringing the death toll to eight,” Adesina confirmed.

He added that 22 suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, and police are continuing their search to apprehend other individuals involved in the mob attack.
