Amnesty International Demands Justice for Slain Plateau Wedding Guests

Amnesty International has urged the Federal Government to launch a thorough investigation into the killing of at least 12 travelers by a mob in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The tragic incident occurred on Friday evening when an 18-seater bus carrying 31 passengers en route to a wedding was ambushed, resulting in 12 deaths and 11 injuries.

In a statement released on Saturday, the human rights organization stressed the urgent need for authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible for the attack without delay.

According to reports, the bus—owned by Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria—was transporting passengers from Basawa in Zaria LGA, Kaduna State, when it was attacked around 8 p.m. Survivors recounted that 12 people were killed on the spot, while 11 others sustained serious injuries and required immediate medical care.

Amnesty’s call for accountability comes amid rising concerns over recurring inter-communal violence in the region.

The organization also referenced a similarly harrowing incident in August 2021, when 22 travelers returning from an Islamic New Year event in Bauchi were murdered on Rukuba Road in Jos North.

Taking to its verified X handle on Saturday, Amnesty International reiterated its stance:

“The horrific killing of 12 travellers in Plateau State demands an immediate, impartial, and effective investigation. Nigerian authorities must ensure justice for victims and prevent such heinous acts from recurring. Impunity only fuels further violence.”

Amnesty called on Nigerian authorities to go beyond public condemnation by implementing concrete actions to prevent future attacks.

The organization described the targeting of commuters as a grave offense that cannot be excused, highlighting it as a direct assault on the right to life and the rule of law.

In addition, Amnesty International emphasized the importance of providing adequate medical treatment for all survivors injured in the attack.
