Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of two respected Nigerian statesmen — former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Mohammed Uwais and former Minister of Education and Petroleum Resources, Professor Jibril Aminu.

In a heartfelt tribute shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday, Obi praised both men as visionary leaders whose dedication and service left an indelible mark on the nation.

Obi lauded Justice Uwais as a jurist who exemplified integrity and a steadfast commitment to the rule of law.

“Justice Uwais was an exceptional figure in the judiciary who upheld justice and legality during his tenure,” Obi said.

He also highlighted Uwais’s critical role in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy through the landmark Uwais Electoral Reform Report, which laid a strong foundation for much-needed reforms in the country’s electoral system.

Turning to Professor Aminu, Obi remembered him as a forward-thinking educationist and patriot. He specifically praised Aminu’s leadership in initiating the Nomadic Education Programme, a bold attempt to bring schooling to Nigeria’s pastoral communities.

“Professor Aminu had a visionary and revolutionary approach to education. His nomadic education initiative sought to reach herdsmen and provide them with learning opportunities, no matter where they were,” Obi noted. “He understood how transformative mass education could be for national development. Had his ideas been fully implemented and sustained, they could have significantly bridged educational gaps in rural areas.”

Obi expressed sadness over the passing of both leaders, emphasizing that Nigeria needs more individuals of their caliber to tackle its many challenges.

He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and to the governments of Kaduna and Adamawa states, praying that Almighty Allah grants the departed eternal rest and gives their loved ones the strength to bear the loss.
