The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed 739 Lassa fever cases and 141 deaths from January to May 25, 2025, with five states — Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, and Ebonyi — responsible for 90% of the cases.

Key Data Highlights:

Total confirmed cases: 739

Total suspected cases: 5,242

Total deaths: 141

Case Fatality Rate (CFR): 19.1% (higher than 2024’s 18.1%)

Breakdown of Top States:

Ondo: 224 cases (30%), 28 deaths

Bauchi: 185 cases (25%), 16 deaths

Edo: 121 cases (16%), 20 deaths

Taraba: 116 cases (16%), 34 deaths

Ebonyi: 21 cases (3%), 11 deaths

The virus has spread across 18 states and 95 LGAs, with 22 healthcare workers infected in 2025 alone.

Lassa fever is a viral haemorrhagic illness primarily spread through contact with infected multimammate rats or contaminated food. The most affected age group is 21–30 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:0.8.

In epidemiological week 21, cases dropped from 13 (in week 20) to six, all reported in Ondo and Bauchi states.

The NCDC has activated its multi-sectoral emergency response system to manage and curb the outbreak nationwide.
