Kano Demands Compensation from FG Over Durbar Cancellations |
The Kano State Government has called on the Federal Government to pay reparations for the cancellation of Durbar celebrations for two consecutive years, citing massive economic losses.
The demand was made by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Tajo Uthman, on Sunday during the Sallah homage by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
> “It’s time we demanded reparation for the losses incurred,” Uthman stated.
He noted that the annual Durbar festival, a UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage, attracts both local and international tourists, significantly boosting Kano’s economy.
> “The cancellations have had a deep impact on our revenue generation and even affected our annual budget,” he said.
Uthman urged the Federal Government to compensate the state and called for the immediate resumption of Durbar activities, which he described as regrettably suspended.
