National Assembly Proposes Official Swearing-In Venue for Future Presidents

The National Assembly has announced plans to introduce a bill mandating that future presidential inaugurations take place at the National Assembly Arcade.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, as part of the events marking the June 12 Democracy Day anniversary. He explained that the move aims to deepen Nigeria's democratic traditions.
In addition, the Senate is planning legislation that would require the President to deliver a 'State of the Nation Address' before a joint sitting of the National Assembly every June 12, aligning the event with the symbolism of Democracy Day.
Bamidele said, “Our goal is to institutionalize the State of the Nation Address through a legislative framework. President Tinubu is in support of this idea, and we believe June 12 is the most appropriate day for such a national address, considering its historical relevance.”
He also emphasized the desire to formalize the National Assembly Arcade as the official location for presidential swearing-in ceremonies, beginning with future inaugurations.
President Bola Tinubu is expected to address a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives on Thursday to commemorate the 2025 Democracy Day.
June 12 is celebrated nationwide in memory of Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the 1993 presidential election — widely regarded as Nigeria's most credible election.
