Lightning Strikes Kill 32 Cows in Ogun

At least 32 cows were reportedly killed by lightning during a heavy downpour on Saturday in the Osara, Obantoko area of Abeokuta, within the Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The tragic incident occurred around noon during the intense rainfall, according to the Baale of Osara, Chief Wasiu Afolabi, who spoke to our correspondent on Sunday.

Afolabi explained that the Fulani herders responsible for the cows informed him of the incident around 2 p.m. on Saturday.

He said the matter had since been reported to the Aregbe Police Division and Dr. Afolashade Adeyemo, the Chairman of Odeda Local Government.

“I was at home on Saturday when the Fulani herders came around 2 p.m. to report that lightning had struck and killed 32 of their cows,” Afolabi recounted.

“When I got to the location where the cows are usually kept before being taken out for grazing, I saw all of them lying lifeless. We have already reported the matter to the Aregbe police and informed the Chairman of Odeda Local Government, Dr. Afolashade Adeyemo, as well as other relevant authorities.

“We’ve also scheduled a meeting with the Fulani herders for this morning to decide the next steps and to ensure that the situation does not disrupt the peace in the community.”

Confirming the incident, Commissioner of Police Lanre Ogunlowo stated in a WhatsApp message to our correspondent that the police are fully aware of the event.

He said, “The Command is aware. The incident was reported to the DPO of Aregbe Division around 1:30 p.m. on 21/06/2025. He led a team to the scene, where it was confirmed that 32 cows had been struck dead by lightning during the heavy rainfall.”
