Bayelsa High Court Judge Justice Umukor

Justice Umukoro, the presiding judge of High Court 7 in Bayelsa State, was kidnapped at gunpoint on Saturday evening near a well-known eatery in the Ekeki area of Yenagoa, around 7:30 pm.

Eyewitnesses told Daily Trust that the attackers, dressed in black uniforms, initially fired shots at the judge but missed. They then intercepted him using an unmarked white Hilux van and forcefully took him away.

The judge’s black Toyota Prado SUV was abandoned at the scene.

A video circulating on social media shows Justice Umukoro visibly struggling as the assailants dragged him into the vehicle.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Muhammad, said via WhatsApp that tactical teams and surveillance drones have been deployed to track and apprehend the kidnappers.

"The command has deployed tactical teams and drones to trail and arrest the hoodlums," he stated.

Justice Umukoro, a prominent figure in the Bayelsa judiciary, was reportedly returning from a private outing when the abduction occurred.

A former chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yenagoa branch, Justice Umukoro is known for presiding over several high-profile cases in the state.

In 2021, he sentenced a man to 10 years in prison for the rape and murder of a five-year-old girl in Akede, Sagbama Local Government Area. He has also overseen numerous election petition c ases in Bayelsa.
