Kogi: Rainstorm Destroys Facilities at Federal Polytechnic Idah, Disrupts Academic Activities

A powerful rainstorm, accompanied by a prolonged downpour on Wednesday, wreaked havoc on the Federal Polytechnic Idah in Kogi State, causing extensive damage to several buildings and disrupting academic activities.

The storm, which lasted for several hours, tore through rooftops, damaged walls, and shattered windows across the campus. Several lecture halls, laboratories, and student hostels reportedly suffered severe destruction.

Describing the incident, the Rector of the institution, Dr. Yakubu Usman, said, “It was a terrifying experience for the Polytechnic, especially at a time like this. We are deeply saddened by the extent of destruction caused by the storm.”

He added that the management is still assessing the full scale of the damage to determine the financial implications of restoration.

“With the level of destruction we’ve seen so far, only urgent intervention from the Federal Government can help the institution recover quickly,” he noted.

Dr. Usman assured students and staff that the school would make every effort to support the affected facilities and ensure that academic activities resume without unnecessary delays.

Principal officers of the institution—including Deputy Rector (Academics), Associate Professor Muhammad Yusuf; Director of Works and Services, Engr. Fajilade Adeniyi; Director of Physical Planning; Dean of Student Affairs; and the Student Union Government (SUG) President and executives—also visited the affected areas.

They described the storm as extremely violent, strong enough to rip off roofs, uproot trees, and blow out windows across campus.

“The rainstorm led to a total blackout and halted academic activities in the affected departments. Hostel accommodations were not spared either,” said Engr. Fajilade Adeniyi, Director of Works and Services.

Several students expressed shock and dismay over the disaster, calling on authorities to act swiftly.

“It was devastating; none of us expected something like this. Many students have had to stay away from school because the storm destroyed essential facilities,” said Sherifat Abubakar, an HND student.

“We are appealing to the school management, government, and well-meaning individuals to come to our aid so academic activities can resume as soon as possible.”
