| Former Chief Justice Mohammed Uwais Dies at 89 |
Nigeria has lost one of its most respected legal minds, as former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Mohammed Uwais, passed away at the age of 89.
His death was confirmed on Friday morning by Ondo State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo.
Justice Uwais served as the head of Nigeria’s judiciary from 1995 until his retirement in 2006. During his time on the bench, he earned widespread praise for his dedication to judicial integrity and efforts to reform the legal system.
After retiring from the Supreme Court, he continued to serve the nation. In 2007, the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua appointed him to lead the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee, a significant initiative aimed at improving Nigeria’s electoral process. The committee included distinguished figures such as Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah and renowned rights advocate Dr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN).
Funeral arrangements have not yet been made public. Tributes from across Nigeria’s legal, political, and civil society circles are expected to pour in over the coming days as the country mourns a jurist who helped shape its legal landscape.
