Democracy Day: FRSC Urges Nigerians to Prioritize Road Safety

As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day on June 12, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Malam Shehu Mohammed, has urged all road users to exercise caution and show consideration for others while traveling.
In a statement released by FRSC’s Public Education Officer, Mr. Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal stressed the need for heightened safety awareness during public holidays, noting that such times often see a spike in road travel and, consequently, road crashes.
He warned that although Democracy Day is a time for celebration and reflection, it should not be marred by reckless driving or traffic violations. Historical data, he said, shows that festive periods often lead to increased road accidents due to disregard for traffic laws.
Mohammed called on Nigerians to drive responsibly, follow traffic regulations, and avoid hazardous behaviors such as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and disobeying traffic signs.
He emphasized that the roads are a shared responsibility and require discipline, patience, and mutual respect to ensure public safety.
Congratulating the nation on 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, the FRSC chief reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to keeping roads safe during and after the festivities.
“Let’s remember: only those who are alive can celebrate. Drive with care, stay safe,” he concluded.
