Democracy Day: Fasoranti Urges Return to 1963 Constitution for True Federalism

Afenifere National Leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, has called for a return to the 1963 Republican Constitution, describing it as a foundation for national unity and sustainable development. In his June 12 Democracy Day message, Fasoranti said the constitution’s federal structure granted Nigeria’s regions meaningful autonomy, which is essential for balanced growth and harmony.
He criticized the current overly centralized governance model, arguing that it does not meet the diverse needs of the country. “True federalism allows regions to govern themselves to a degree, which is vital for progress,” he stated.
While commending 26 years of uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999, Fasoranti highlighted the sacrifices made by civil society groups and members of NADECO who fought for democracy’s restoration. He expressed hope that the spirit of activism and progressive movements would continue to uphold democratic values.
Fasoranti also addressed the rising insecurity across the nation, urging the urgent establishment of state police and community policing systems. He said such localized approaches would better tackle security challenges and reduce the impact of criminal elements.
He concluded by reminding Nigerians of the deep significance of June 12, encouraging unity and collective commitment to national progress.
