Terror Strikes Again: Multiple Abductions on Benue Highway |
Tension has gripped residents of Benue State following a brutal attack by suspected armed herdsmen on travelers along the Oweto–Apa–Adoka–Otukpo expressway. The incident, which occurred Friday evening, has left many either dead or missing.
The ambush reportedly took place between the Asaba and Olojo axis, where armed assailants blocked the road and opened fire on unsuspecting commuters. Victims included truck drivers and other travelers heading in both directions between Otukpo and Oweto.
Tragically, one of the deceased was identified as a commercial motorcyclist—popularly known as an "Okada" rider—who was en route to Agatu carrying a casket. His lifeless body was found beside his motorcycle and the casket, which were abandoned at the scene along with other vehicles.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as gunshots rang out, forcing many to flee into nearby bushes for safety. A number of travelers were kidnapped in the process.
John Ikwulono, a former Vice Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, confirmed the incident, stating that the full extent of casualties remains unclear.
“We can only confirm the death of the motorcyclist at this point. Many others may have been taken or harmed, but details are still sketchy. The gunmen were shooting sporadically, possibly to prevent anyone from escaping,” Ikwulono said.
Attempts to get an official statement from the Benue State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the spokesperson, Catherine Anene, was unreachable at the time of filing this report.
The incident has reignited concerns over the rising insecurity in Benue and the need for swift action by security agencies.
