Frank Leboeuf Accuses Maresca of Dishonesty Over Chelsea Confidence Claim

Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has called out Blues manager Enzo Maresca, accusing him of being less than truthful about his unwavering belief in the squad.

The criticism comes after Maresca stated he had always trusted the potential of his team, following Chelsea’s emphatic 4-1 comeback victory over Real Betis in the UEFA Europa Conference League final held at Wroclaw Stadium.

While celebrating Chelsea’s European triumph and a fourth-place finish in the Premier League, Maresca praised his team’s resilience and consistency—claims that didn’t sit well with Leboeuf.

Speaking on ESPN FC, the 1998 World Cup winner challenged Maresca’s version of events.

“His opening statement is simply not true,” Leboeuf said. “He said he never doubted his players, but I believe he did—just like everyone else. Even the squad had moments where they weren’t sure of themselves.”

Chelsea's campaign wasn’t smooth sailing. A post-Christmas slump saw the team lose six out of eleven games, raising doubts over their top-four ambitions. Yet under Maresca’s leadership, the team turned their season around, eventually clinching a European title and securing Champions League qualification.

Despite the ups and downs, Chelsea managed 35 wins and 13 losses from 57 matches across all competitions—a performance that exceeded many expectations.

Leboeuf admitted that Maresca deserves credit for the turnaround, but remained critical of the coach’s attempt to rewrite the emotional rollercoaster of Chelsea’s season.

“Winning the Conference League and finishing fourth is commendable,” Leboeuf added, “but let’s not pretend it was all smooth and certain. That’s just not the truth.
