Military Thwarts Terrorist Attack in Borno, Neutralizes Dozens

In a decisive victory for Nigerian forces, dozens of Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists were eliminated during a failed attack in New Marte, Borno State, on Tuesday, May 27, 2025. The insurgents, who had planned a deadly assault, were overpowered by a combined force of ground troops and air support under Operation HADIN KAI.

The foiled attack was repelled by soldiers from the 24 Task Force Brigade Garrison and the 134 Special Forces Battalion. Backed by aerial intelligence, surveillance, and offensive strikes, the troops engaged the terrorists in a fierce gun battle, forcing them into a hasty retreat. Many fled with gunshot wounds, while others were left dead on the battlefield.

Among the items recovered were a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) SUV and multiple motorcycles abandoned by the fleeing terrorists.

Speaking on the incident, Reuben Kovangiya, the acting spokesperson for Operation HADIN KAI, confirmed the success of the operation. “In a well-coordinated response, our forces successfully neutralized the threat and inflicted significant losses on the enemy. This operation underscores our commitment to restoring peace in the North East.”

Tragically, two soldiers lost their lives during the confrontation. Their sacrifice, however, ensured the safety of the military base and surrounding communities.

In a separate but related incident, terrorists also attempted to breach the Forward Operating Base at Kumshe but were repelled with heavy losses by the alert troops.

Kovangiya emphasized the military’s resolve: “Our troops remain undeterred and are determined to maintain pressure on terrorist elements, denying them any opportunity to regroup or operate freely.”

He added that the ongoing operations reflect the renewed synergy between ground and air components, marking a significant step towards restoring peace and enabling socio-economic progress in the region.
