Unpaid Salaries: Newly Recruited Nurses in Kaduna Cry Out for Justice

The affected nurses, who wished to remain anonymous, shared their heartbreaking stories. One nurse explained, "We started work in June 2023 but only began receiving salaries from February 2024. We have single mothers and divorcees among us who are struggling to make ends meet.

Over 200 dedicated health workers, recruited by the Kaduna State Government in June 2023, are facing a dire situation. Despite their tireless efforts in serving the state's healthcare system, they have been left unpaid for eight months. The newly recruited nurses, who were posted to general hospitals across the state, have only received three months' pay, and even that was less than the amount stated on their appointment letters.

The affected nurses, who wished to remain anonymous, shared their heartbreaking stories. One nurse explained, "We started work in June 2023 but only began receiving salaries from February 2024. We have single mothers and divorcees among us who are struggling to make ends meet." Another midwife revealed that she spends a significant amount on transportation to and from work daily, leaving her with little to cover other expenses.

The Chairman of the National Association of Nurses and Midwife, Kaduna Chapter, Ishaku Yakubu, confirmed the unpaid salary arrears and assured that the union is working to resolve the issue. "We are aware of the situation and are pursuing their arrears. I have visited the Office of the Head of Service to discuss this matter."

The plight of these dedicated health workers highlights the need for prompt action from the state government. Governor Uba Sani must intervene to ensure that these hardworking individuals receive their pending arrears and a salary increase to alleviate their burden. It is only fair that those who serve the state's healthcare system are given the compensation they deserve.
