Naja’atu Mohammed Slams EFCC Over Tambuwal’s Detention, Accuses Tinubu’s Government of Targeting Opposition

Northern political figure Hajiya Naja’atu Mohammed has strongly criticized the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its recent interrogation of Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, describing the move as a political clampdown on opposition voices in Nigeria. She alleged that the actions were orchestrated by those in power to intimidate members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mohammed made these remarks during a visit to Tambuwal’s residence shortly after his release from EFCC custody. She claimed that the incident had effectively turned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu into the ADC’s “campaign coordinator” for the upcoming elections, saying the clampdown would only boost the party’s popularity nationwide.

On August 11, 2025, investigative outlet SaharaReporters reported that Tambuwal, a former Sokoto State Governor and current Senator representing Sokoto South, had been detained over an alleged ₦189 billion fraud. The case reportedly involved massive cash withdrawals in violation of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. Tambuwal was released on Tuesday, August 12, but the EFCC did not provide further details regarding the terms of his release.

“This incident proves they have lost focus, strategy, and direction,” Mohammed said. “If they think this will weaken us, they are mistaken. If they do not arrest me too, I will feel like I have not yet started my political struggle. May God give you (Tambuwal) the strength to continue because, without you, ADC will be put to shame.”

She further accused those in power of running Nigeria into the ground, describing them as “hypocrites, illiterates, and people with the highest level of rudeness.” Quoting Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), she emphasized that “any person who is not afraid of offending God has no faith,” urging Nigerians to unite in taking back the country from corrupt leadership.

According to Mohammed, the EFCC’s alleged targeting of opposition leaders will not weaken the ADC. Instead, she argued, it will strengthen the party’s resolve and increase its visibility ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
