The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially approved the establishment of nine new private universities across the country, further expanding the nation’s higher education landscape.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during a press briefing at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday, following the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to the minister, the newly licensed institutions are:
- Tazkiyah University, Kaduna State
- Leadership University, Abuja
- Jimoh Babalola University, Kwara State
- Bridget University, Mbaise, Imo State
- Greenland University, Jigawa State
- JEFAP University, Niger State
- Azione Verde University, Imo State
- Unique Open University, Lagos State
- American Open University, Ogun State
Dr. Alausa revealed that the Tinubu administration inherited a backlog of 551 applications for establishing tertiary institutions. These were subjected to stricter accreditation and approval guidelines set by the National Universities Commission (NUC), which reduced the number to 79 active applications. Out of these, nine universities received approval on Wednesday.
He further explained that several of the newly approved universities had been awaiting accreditation for over six years, with promoters already constructing campuses and investing billions of naira in infrastructure.
“Due to inefficiencies within the NUC, these approvals were unnecessarily delayed. However, reforms have now been implemented to streamline the process, and today’s approvals are part of clearing the backlog,” Alausa stated.
In addition, the minister announced that the Federal Government has placed a temporary moratorium on new applications for private universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education—except for those that meet the new operational standards introduced by the Ministry of Education.
