President Tinubu Orders National Flags at Half-Staff for Seven Days in Honour of Buhari

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed that all national flags across Nigeria be flown at half-staff for seven days in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday while undergoing medical treatment in London, United Kingdom.

In a statement released by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu paid tribute to Buhari, describing him as a patriot, soldier, and statesman whose legacy of service, integrity, and sacrifice will endure for generations.

“As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags be flown at half-staff across the country for seven days, beginning today,” Tinubu said.

He added:

“We honour his service. We reflect on his legacy. And we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul.”

President Tinubu also announced that an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) will be convened on Tuesday, solely dedicated to honouring the late President.

“The Federal Government will accord President Buhari full state honours befitting his towering contributions to the development of our nation,” the statement continued.

Tinubu further offered prayers for Buhari, saying:

“May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus. May his life continue to inspire future generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.”

A National Legacy

Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria in two distinct eras: first as Military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985, and later as a democratically elected President, winning two terms in office in 2015 and 2019. His leadership was marked by a strong anti-corruption stance, efforts to strengthen national security, and policies aimed at economic reform.

Further details about funeral arrangements and national observances are expected to be released by the presidency in the coming days.
