ISWAP Militants Execute Seven Local Security Operatives in Borno State |
Suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have brutally executed seven local security operatives in Magumeri Local Government Area of Borno State. The victims included members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), local hunters, and community vigilantes.
The terrorist group released a disturbing video documenting the execution. In the footage, a masked ISWAP militant interrogates the captives one by one, accusing them of collaborating with Nigerian authorities and labeling them as traitors. Clad in red jumpsuits, the victims were seen kneeling before armed insurgents who later slit their throats and dumped their bodies into a shallow grave.
The CJTF and local hunters have been instrumental in supporting the Nigerian military’s counter-insurgency operations across the northeast. However, they remain frequent targets of deadly attacks by ISWAP and Boko Haram.
A senior official in Magumeri, speaking anonymously to Daily Trust, confirmed that at least four of the victims were members of the CJTF and local hunting groups.
“We were aware of their abduction and were praying for their rescue,” the official said. “It’s devastating to wake up to this kind of horror. May Allah forgive them and give strength to their families.”
This execution is part of a series of similar atrocities committed by ISWAP. In July 2022, the group released a video showing the execution of five humanitarian workers affiliated with Action Against Hunger, the International Rescue Committee, and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
Between January 2024 and July 2025, dozens of local security operatives—including CJTF members, hunters, and vigilantes—have been killed while defending their communities in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa States. ISWAP and Boko Haram continue to target these groups through ambushes, targeted killings, and home invasions.
In January 2023, CJTF chairman Babashehu Abdulganiu reported that at least 1,773 members had died between 2012 and 2022 in the fight against insurgents, many in bombings and direct combat, particularly in the Lake Chad and Sambisa Forest regions.
The violence continues to escalate in towns across Yobe State—such as Gujba, Buni Yadi, and Kasaisa—where militants now conduct door-to-door searches to eliminate local security volunteers.
