In a surprising development ahead of Nigeria's semi-final clash against South Africa at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Casablanca, Morocco, Nigerian football icon Asisat Oshoala has officially announced her retirement from international football.

The six-time African Women’s Player of the Year shared the news via her official Facebook page on Monday night, stating that the decision to step down from national duties was taken to pave the way for the next generation of football talent in Nigeria.

“At 30, with six African Women’s Best Player awards, I have decided to bow out and begin a new chapter after WAFCON 2024/25,” she wrote.

Oshoala expressed deep gratitude for the unwavering support she received throughout her international career. “Thank you for your unwavering support. I’m forever grateful for the love and sacrifices shared with me throughout this journey,” she added.

Widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest female footballers, Oshoala’s career is adorned with numerous accolades. Her six CAF Women’s Player of the Year titles—won in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2023—cement her status as the most decorated female footballer in African history.

Her extraordinary goal-scoring ability, fierce determination, and global influence have made her a beacon of inspiration for aspiring athletes across Africa and beyond.
