IBB Mourns Late Buhari: “I Never Doubted His Patriotism”

Former Military President of Nigeria, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), has paid a heartfelt tribute to his longtime friend, colleague, and fellow statesman, President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a resolute patriot and moral compass whose life was firmly rooted in service, discipline, and unwavering integrity.

In a personally signed statement released in response to the news of Buhari’s passing on July 13, 2025, General Babangida expressed profound grief, saying he received the announcement “with a deeply heavy heart,” and noted that the former president's life and legacy will remain indelibly etched in the annals of Nigeria’s history.

“Our paths first crossed in 1962 when we both joined the Nigerian Military Training College in Kaduna,” Babangida recalled. “Even then, Muhammadu stood out—quiet but determined, principled yet humble, profoundly patriotic, and fiercely loyal to Nigeria.”

Babangida reflected on their enduring relationship, which transcended military service and extended into the realms of governance and national leadership over several decades.

> “Throughout our parallel careers, fate placed us in leadership roles during different, often turbulent, chapters of our nation’s story. Yet, Buhari remained steadfast in his belief in integrity, order, and the sanctity of public service. His dedication to Nigeria was unshakeable, even in moments of solitude or controversy.”

He went on to describe the late president as a “deeply spiritual man” who drew strength from faith and lived with humility and moral conviction. Though they may have had differing views at times, Babangida affirmed that their mutual love for country was never in doubt.

“We may not have agreed on every issue—as brothers seldom do—but I never once doubted his sincerity, nor his profound love for Nigeria,” he said.

Calling Buhari’s death “more than the passing of a former Head of State or two-term civilian President,” Babangida said Nigeria had lost a symbol of continuity—an embodiment of the country’s evolving leadership across military and democratic eras.

“Even in retirement, he remained a moral compass to many, and a model of modesty in public life. His quiet strength and dedication to national unity were qualities that defined his life’s journey,” he added.

General Babangida extended his condolences to Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the late president’s children, grandchildren, and the nation at large.

“May Allah (SWT), in His infinite mercy, forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus,” he prayed.

President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, passed away at the age of 83 while receiving medical care in London.
