Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom has defended his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), calling it a strategic move in the state's best interest.
Speaking to a massive crowd at the Victor Attah International Airport upon his return from France on Wednesday, Eno urged citizens to disregard critics of his defection, especially those outside the state. He said, as the leader of Akwa Ibom, he’s best positioned to chart a smooth and progressive course.
“Some of those criticizing us don’t even belong to Akwa Ibom, yet they poke their noses into our affairs,” he said. “I’m the one holding the steering wheel, and I know how to avoid traffic and potholes. I’m taking this state on a smooth expressway to greatness.”
The governor reiterated that his move to the APC is rooted in a desire to align Akwa Ibom with President Bola Tinubu’s administration and Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s leadership, not to cause division.
He defended the defection as his constitutional right to associate freely and called on citizens to stay focused and supportive of the direction his administration is taking.
Joining him at the airport, APC State Chairman Stephen Ntukekpo dismissed criticism of the governor’s switch as baseless. He praised Eno as a capable leader who will continue to serve with dedication.
Prince Enobong Uwah, Secretary to the State Government, led a team of supporters to welcome Eno, calling the large turnout a sign of strong public support for a governor who has shown effective leadership.
