Tragedy in Borno: Bomb Blast at Bus Stop Kills Nine, Injures Many |
Nine people were feared dead and several others injured on Saturday following a bomb explosion at a local bus stop in Mairari village, Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State.
The deadly blast, which occurred around 11 a.m., was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) reportedly planted by terrorists. Victims were waiting to board commercial vehicles when the explosion occurred.
Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan, confirmed the incident, expressing grief over the loss of his constituents. “Nine of my resilient constituents were killed,” he said, adding prayers for the injured who are receiving treatment in Monguno and Maiduguri hospitals.
Lawan also decried the resurgence of terrorist activities in the area, noting that Mairari had been resettled twice but remains unsafe due to continued Boko Haram and ISWAP presence. He urged military and security agencies to restore control, especially in Gudumbali and Mairari, which remain under terrorist occupation.
Efforts to contact the Borno State Police Command’s spokesperson, Nahum Daso, were unsuccessful.
This attack comes just days after a deadly ambush in Marte, also in Borno State, where nine members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) were killed. The CJTF, a volunteer force supporting the Nigerian military, had engaged insurgents in a fierce battle. After repelling the attackers, the team triggered another IED while recovering a fallen comrade’s body, leading to more casualties.
A situation report from CTU Base 8 revealed that several civilians were also captured and executed during the Marte incident.
