Tinubu: “We’re Making Farming More Attractive and Modern for Nigerian Youths”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that his administration is on a mission to make farming more appealing—“more sexy”—to young Nigerians, through bold reforms and state-of-the-art agricultural initiatives.

He made the statement on Monday at the official launch of the Renewed Hope Agricultural Mechanisation Programme in Abuja.

“We’re deploying over 2,000 modern tractors, 50 industrial-grade bulldozers for land preparation, 12 fully equipped mobile workshops, and more than 9,000 specialised farming implements,” Tinubu announced.

He emphasized that the modern tools will not only drive mechanisation and improve service delivery but will also open up job opportunities and change young people’s perception of agriculture.

“These tools will revolutionize the way we farm. You no longer need to apply 18th-century methods to a 21st-century agricultural system,” the President added.

Equipping Youths for the Future

Tinubu also highlighted the Federal Government’s partnerships with international allies to equip Nigerian youths with essential skills in modern agriculture, positioning them for financial independence and sustainable livelihoods.

“We have friends around the world. Belarus, for instance, is committed to helping our young people—training them in agriculture, mechanisation, technology, and even equipment repair and fabrication,” he said.

He noted that the nationwide distribution of this equipment would unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s fertile lands and favourable climate.

“We must seize this opportunity to achieve complete agricultural independence and food sovereignty,” Tinubu urged.

A New Era in Agriculture

The President called on all beneficiaries of the programme to ensure responsible and effective use of the equipment.

“To all stakeholders receiving these assets—put them to work. We will support you, supervise you, and hold you accountable. Let history remember today as the beginning of Nigeria’s agricultural renaissance—where modern technology meets the resilience of our farmers to deliver unprecedented prosperity,” he stated.

Tinubu also commended the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security for its proactive steps in combating the food crisis and helping maintain stability in the nation’s food supply.

A Major Leap in Mechanisation

Minister of State for Agriculture, Aliyu Abdullahi, revealed that this scheme is the first of four initiatives under President Tinubu’s directive, and is designed to significantly upgrade Nigeria’s mechanisation capacity.

“At the Ministry, we’ve always believed in your vision, and your leadership has powered us to fulfil that promise to Nigerians,” Abdullahi said.

He noted that Nigeria’s current mechanisation rate of 0.27 horsepower per hectare would rise dramatically to nearly 2.5 horsepower per hectare through the scheme.

“This is a massive leap—almost matching the global average. Farmers want to work smarter, not harder. The equipment introduced today will drastically reduce physical strain and double productivity,” he explained.

“For example, where a farmer was previously getting two tons per hectare, this programme can help increase that to four tons or more,” the minister concluded.

With the Renewed Hope Mechanisation Programme now underway, the Tinubu administration is pushing for a future where agriculture is not just a necessity—but a modern, attractive, and profitable venture for Nigeria’s youth.
