Student Death: Niger Governor Orders Closure of IBB University

In response to growing security concerns and the tragic death of a student earlier this week, Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has ordered the immediate closure of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai.
The directive was announced in a statement issued Thursday morning by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, and made available to LEADERSHIP.
“With deep concern, the Governor of Niger State, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, has directed the immediate closure of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai,” the statement read.
The government explained that the move was prompted by “recent security breaches and the unfortunate loss of lives within the University community.”
Alhaji Usman emphasized the administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives, particularly those of students. “The safety and security of all citizens, especially our students, remains a top priority. We are deeply saddened by the recent incidents, and the government is taking swift, proactive steps to address the situation.”
LEADERSHIP recalls that a student of the university, Jafar, was killed in the early hours of Monday during a suspected armed robbery at a student lodge in the Ndakikpabu area of Lapai town.
Jafar was reportedly stabbed in the neck around 2:30 a.m. by the attackers. He was rushed to the General Hospital in Lapai but was later confirmed dead.
