Sokoto Governor Aliyu Confirms Talks With Bandits in Pursuit of Peace in Troubled Communities

Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has confirmed that his administration is engaging with “repentant bandits” as part of a strategic move to foster genuine reconciliation and lasting peace in communities plagued by insecurity.

In a statement issued Friday by his Special Adviser on Security Matters, Col. Ahmed Usman (rtd.), the governor emphasized that the peace initiative is driven by a sincere commitment to ending violence—not by fear or weakness.

The clarification came in response to criticism from social media commentator Basharu Giyawa, who recently questioned the government’s outreach to armed groups willing to lay down their weapons. Usman pointed out that Giyawa had previously expressed interest in serving as a mediator between the state and the armed elements, making his current stance contradictory.

Usman stressed that the government’s approach is not a sign of surrender but a well-thought-out, human-centered strategy aimed at resolving years of unrest that have devastated communities in Rabah, Goronyo, Isa, Sabon Birni, and other local government areas.

“Our discussions with the bandits are part of a genuine reconciliation effort. This is a calculated decision to restore peace and rebuild communities that have suffered deeply from years of armed conflict,” Usman explained.

“Our people are living in constant trauma. Many farmers have deserted their land, food production has declined, and economic life is in ruins. This has led to soaring food prices and worsening insecurity,” he added.

Usman clarified that only those who show a sincere willingness to embrace peace and agree to undergo strict rehabilitation and monitoring will be considered for dialogue.

He emphasized that security forces remain actively deployed in vulnerable areas and that the dialogue initiative complements, rather than replaces, ongoing security operations.

“This is not about appeasement,” Usman stated. “It is a human-centered approach aimed at achieving peace and sustainable development.”
