Security Alert: U.S. Warns Citizens to Steer Clear of Military, Government Facilities in Abuja


The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a security advisory, urging American citizens to avoid unnecessary visits to Nigerian military and government facilities in Abuja due to rising global security concerns.


In a statement released on Monday, the U.S. Embassy announced that its staff and their families are barred from accessing military or government sites in the Nigerian capital unless it is for official business.


U.S. citizens were also advised to remain vigilant in public spaces, especially in areas frequented by Westerners, expatriates, and government personnel.


The statement read:

“Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, U.S. Mission Nigeria informs U.S. citizens that all U.S. Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to Nigerian military sites or other government venues in Abuja at this time.”


Recommended actions include:

Staying alert in public places, especially where Westerners, expatriates, or government officials gather


Avoiding large crowds and unnecessary travel


Breaking predictable routines


Familiarizing yourself with emergency exits upon entering buildings


Reviewing your personal security 


Despite the heightened alert, the Consular Sections of the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remai n open for operations.
