Ribery Criticizes Ronaldo Over Ballon d’Or Comments Amid 2013 Controversy |
Former French international Franck Ribery appeared to take a dig at Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent remarks regarding the Ballon d’Or, hinting at his lingering frustration over the 2013 snub.
On Saturday, Ribery used social media to respond to Ronaldo’s view on the award’s criteria.
Ronaldo had recently told reporters that Ousmane Dembele deserves to win the Ballon d’Or this year, largely because he helped Paris Saint-Germain win the Champions League.
“The value of individual awards has become debatable; I can’t say who should win,” Ronaldo said. “But in my view, players who shine and win the Champions League should be recognised.”
Ribery, who won the Champions League with Bayern Munich during the 2012–13 season, finished third in the 2013 Ballon d’Or race behind Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Responding to Ronaldo’s latest statement, Ribery posted online: “So you NEED to win the Champions League to win the Ballon d’Or?”
