Patience Jonathan, wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, has revealed that she nearly dropped out of her PhD programme at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education because of the intense pressure from her lecturers.

The former First Lady recently completed her doctorate in Psychology, Guidance, and Counselling. Sharing her experience during a testimony at Streams of Joy International Church, she said the journey was filled with frustration, doubts, and moments where she considered quitting.

She recalled being overwhelmed by repeated assignments and strict demands from her lecturers. “Sometimes, a lecturer would ask me to redo a page, and I’d feel like giving up. I’d think, ‘This man doesn’t know I’m old. Why am I even doing this? It’s just to keep my brain active.’”

However, she gave credit to God for giving her the strength to complete the programme, saying, “What seemed impossible, God made possible.”

She admitted that initially, she doubted whether she could succeed in academia after serving as the First Lady. “When I picked up the PhD form, I told myself, ‘You’ve already had your career, what’s the point?’ But God reminded me, ‘If your children can do it, why not you?’”

Despite being the oldest in her class, she wasn’t ashamed to ask questions. “I’d sit on the bench with the younger students. I was their ‘Mama’ in class. I wasn’t embarrassed to raise my hand—even if I had to ask the same question three times before I understood.”
