A devastating flood in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State has claimed at least 200 lives, with over 500 people still missing, according to reports from the BBC. The disaster has displaced more than 3,000 residents, destroyed three bridges, and affected 503 households.


Heartbreaking stories are emerging from survivors. One of them, Adamu Yusuf, lost his wife and newborn baby to the flood. “I watched helplessly as water washed away my family,” he recounted.


According to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA):


153 deaths have been confirmed in Mokwa alone.


11 people were injured, and 58 houses damaged in nearby Ndayako.


In Raba community, no fatalities were recorded, but five houses and one bridge were damaged.



The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has begun distributing relief materials, while working with community leaders to document the missing and the deceased.


Peter Obi Visits, Donates ₦20 Million


Presidential candidate Peter Obi visited the affected areas, accompanied by Labour Party officials. After touring the scene and visiting the Deputy Governor, Obi called for urgent federal support and donated ₦20 million to relief efforts.


> “Over 200 lives have been lost… more than 3,000 displaced. As a family, we must come together to care, comfort and stand together in times of grief,” Obi stated.
