Legendary Nigerian Musician Mike Ejeagha Dies at 95 |
Veteran Nigerian highlife icon, Mike Ejeagha, popularly known as "Gentleman Mike Ejeagha" and fondly remembered for his hit “Gwogwogwongwo,” has passed away at the age of 95.
Ejeagha died on Friday around 8pm at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu after a prolonged illness, according to his eldest son, Emma Ejeagha, who confirmed the news and requested prayers for the family. Burial details will be announced at a later date.
Born on April 4, 1930, in Imezi Owa, Enugu State, Ejeagha began his music career in the mid-20th century. He rose to national prominence in the 1960s and 1980s with timeless Igbo highlife hits like Omekagu, Uwa Mgbede Ka Mma, and Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche (Gwogwogwongwo).
His unique blend of folk storytelling, proverbs, and melodic rhythms made him a cultural treasure and earned him a revered place in Nigerian music history. His legacy includes over 300 recordings archived at the National Archives of Nigeria.
In 2024, Ejeagha's 1983 classic Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche went viral on social media through a dance challenge, reconnecting younger generations with his music and cultural contributions.
His death marks the end of a golden era for Igbo highlife, but his influence lives on through his rich body of work and commitment to preserving traditional folklore.
