Ireland Deports 35 Nigerians for Immigration Violations

The Republic of Ireland has deported 35 Nigerian nationals—including 21 men, 9 women, and 5 children—on a chartered flight that left Dublin Airport on Wednesday night and arrived in Nigeria on Thursday.

Irish Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, confirmed the deportation, emphasizing Ireland's commitment to enforcing its immigration laws. “Ireland has a rules-based immigration system, and it’s important those rules are upheld,” he stated. The flight reportedly made an unscheduled stop due to a medical emergency on board but continued without major issues.

The deportation was carried out by the Garda National Immigration Bureau, in collaboration with the Department of Justice. Officials described it as part of ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with Irish immigration policies.

However, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) claimed it was unaware of the deportation. NiDCOM spokesperson Abdur-Rahman Balogun said the agency had no prior knowledge of the removal of the 35 individuals.

This action follows Ireland’s resumed use of chartered deportation flights earlier this year. In February and May, dozens of individuals were also deported to Georgia under similar arrangements, costing the Irish government over €100,000.

Minister O’Callaghan had earlier warned that Ireland would not tolerate misuse of its asylum system. “If you're not entitled to asylum, don't come to Ireland,” he said.

The Justice Department says the use of chartered flights has improved its ability to enforce immigration rulings.
