Buratai Survives Armed Ambush by Boko Haram in Borno – Senator Ndume |
Retired Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, narrowly escaped a deadly ambush on Friday when his convoy was attacked by suspected Boko Haram militants in Borno State.
Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South, disclosed the incident during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Sunday. He said the attack occurred near a frontline military base, where Buratai and his escorting troops were caught in a fierce gun battle.
Though casualty figures are not yet clear, Ndume confirmed that the insurgents destroyed key military hardware, including Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles (MRAPs), tanks, and heavy weapons. He noted that in some cases, the attackers loot the equipment after wrecking them.
“This is a critical security emergency,” Ndume stressed. “Insurgents now move about freely, attacking and looting military installations. The situation is spiraling out of control.”
He added that the security crisis is no longer confined to the North-East. According to him, all six geopolitical zones are experiencing different forms of insecurity, from terrorism and banditry to oil theft and sabotage. Only the South-West, he said, remains relatively calm.
The attack on Buratai has reignited urgent calls for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s security operations, especially in the insurgency-plagued North-East where both Boko Haram and ISWAP still operate unchecked.
Buratai led Nigeria’s military as Army Chief from 2015 to 2021 and played a prominent role in the fight against insurgency. Despite retiring, he continues to wield influence in national security matters.
