Abuja Remains Safe Despite US Travel Advisory – Federal Government Assures |
The Federal Government has reassured citizens, residents, and visitors that Abuja remains safe and secure, despite a recent travel advisory issued by the United States Embassy.
The advisory, which restricts non-official visits by embassy staff to military and government facilities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), prompted the government’s response on Monday.
In a statement, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized that there is no cause for concern, stressing that Nigeria’s security agencies are fully committed to safeguarding the FCT and the nation at large.
“Abuja remains safe for citizens, residents, and visitors alike,” Idris stated.
“Our security agencies are working tirelessly to ensure the continued protection and safety of everyone in the FCT and across the country.”
The US Embassy had earlier issued an alert advising its staff and their families to avoid unofficial travel to Nigerian military or government facilities in Abuja, citing global security developments.
The advisory also recommended precautionary measures, urging individuals to stay alert in public places, especially those frequented by Westerners, expatriates, and government officials.
“Actions to Take: Remain vigilant in public spaces, avoid large gatherings, and consider limiting unnecessary travel,” the statement advised.
“Avoid predictable routines, be aware of emergency exits in buildings, and review your personal security plans.”
Despite the restrictions, both the Consular Section of the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain open and operational.
Minister Idris downplayed any suggestion that the advisory stemmed from a specific threat within the capital.
“The US advisory is based on general global security trends and not tied to any imminent or specific threat in Abuja,” he explained.
“We assure all diplomatic missions, investors, development partners, and the general public that there is no reason for alarm.”
He also highlighted the proactive role Nigeria’s security and intelligence agencies have played in addressing potential threats across the country.
“Our security architecture remains robust and responsive. Agencies are actively monitoring the situation nationwide and are fully prepared to act decisively against any threat,” Idris added.
The minister urged Nigerians to go about their daily activities with confidence, while also remaining security-conscious and reporting any suspicious behavior to the authorities.
“We encourage the public to continue their lawful activities without fear, while maintaining vigilance and cooperating with security agencies,” he said.
Finally, the Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to preserving Abuja’s status as one of the most secure capital cities in the world.
