The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has addressed the widespread outrage following reports that some students were forced to write their English Language WASSCE paper late into the night in various parts of Nigeria.
Across several states—including Oyo, Ogun, Benue, and Osun—candidates sat for the critical exam under torchlight and in poorly lit classrooms due to the delayed arrival of examination materials.
In response, WAEC’s spokesperson, Moyosola Adeshina, issued a statement attributing the delay to enhanced security and logistical protocols. These measures, according to WAEC, were designed to prevent examination leaks and protect the integrity of the test.
“While our aim was to ensure the credibility of the examination, we acknowledge the operational difficulties that led to delays in some centres,” the statement read. “We deeply regret any inconvenience caused to candidates, schools, and parents.”
WAEC emphasized that despite the disruptions, the council successfully safeguarded the sanctity of the exam. It also reaffirmed its commitment to improving future operations and upholding excellence in the conduct of its examinations.
“We appreciate the patience and understanding of all stakeholders and assure the public that we are reviewing our processes to ensure a smoother experience moving forward,” WAEC concluded.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion online, with education advocates urging WAEC to strike a balance between security and the wellbeing of students during national examinations.
