In a major victory against insurgency, the Nigerian Army has successfully eliminated a notorious terrorist leader, Amir Abu Fatima, in northern Borno State during a precision military operation.
The daring mission was executed in the early hours of Friday by Special Forces from the 19 Brigade under Sector 3 of Operation Hadin Kai. The operation targeted the Kukawa axis, an area known as a hotbed for terrorist activities near Lake Chad.
According to security expert Zagazola Makama, who disclosed the development via X, the operation was part of a high-level intelligence-led offensive designed to dismantle the leadership of terrorist factions in the region. Abu Fatima, who had a ₦100 million bounty on his head, was the primary target of the mission.
Elite troops reportedly stormed the terrorist enclave, leading to an intense gun battle. During the firefight, Abu Fatima sustained severe gunshot wounds and was captured alive but succumbed to his injuries shortly afterward due to excessive bleeding.
In addition to Abu Fatima, his deputy, key bomb experts, and several fighters were also eliminated in the operation. Troops recovered a significant cache of weapons at the scene, including AK-47 rifles, loaded magazines, and materials used for making improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Military sources described the operation as a major blow to the terrorist network operating around the Lake Chad region, emphasizing that efforts are ongoing to consolidate on the gains and prevent regrouping.
