Tinubu to Commission Landmark 11 Road Projects, Including Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, on May 31

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to inaugurate 11 major road and bridge projects across Nigeria on Saturday, May 31, in a historic move to boost national infrastructure and connectivity.

The Federal Ministry of Works made the announcement on Friday, highlighting that the commissioning will be conducted through both physical and virtual ceremonies.

A key highlight of the event will be the formal opening of a 30-kilometre section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway — a centerpiece of Tinubu's Renewed Hope infrastructure agenda. The launch event will take place at Kilometre 8 along the project corridor, near Jakande Estate in Lagos State.

This newly completed section, stretching from Ahmadu Bello Way on Victoria Island to Eleko Village in Lekki, represents the first phase of the coastal highway and was delivered by Hi-tech Construction Company. The full project, spanning 700 kilometres across nine coastal states, is expected to redefine transportation in Nigeria, stimulate tourism, and unlock new investment opportunities in the South.

In addition to the coastal highway, President Tinubu will also commission 10 other completed road and bridge projects in various states, including:

Lagos–Ibadan Expressway (Shagamu–Ibadan section) – 166.8km, constructed by RCC Nigeria Ltd

East-West Road (Eleme Junction to Ahoada) – 94km, delivered by Setraco Nigeria Ltd

Alesi–Ugep Road, Cross River State – 67.1km, by Sermatech Nigeria Ltd

Ikorodu–Shagamu Road, Lagos/Ogun States – 30.4km, executed by Arab Contractors

Enugu–Lokpanta Expressway (First 16km) – 61km under rehabilitation

New Artisan Market Bridge, Enugu – 75m dual-span bridge, built by CCECC

New Bridge at Akpoha, Ebonyi State – 75m single-span, also by CCECC

Port Harcourt–Onne Junction (East-West Road) – First 15km, by RCC

Lagos–Badagry Expressway (Agbara–Seme Border) – 48.6km, constructed by CGC Nigeria Ltd

Also set for virtual commissioning are additional road projects under the Renewed Hope initiative, including portions of the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway and further rehabilitation of the Lagos–Badagry Expressway.

The day will also mark the groundbreaking of new strategic projects, such as the Ibadan–Ife–Ilesha–Akure–Benin highway, the Nembe–Brass road, upgrades on the Enugu–Onitsha expressway, and the Abakpa flyover in Enugu State.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, hailed the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as a legacy project of the Tinubu administration, emphasizing its symbolic and practical significance.

“This highway stands as a model for infrastructure excellence across Africa,” Umahi stated. “Its aesthetics and structural brilliance give a glimpse of what transformational leadership can deliver.”

He added that dignitaries, including state governors, lawmakers, ministers, agency heads, and international development partners, have been invited to witness the event.

“As we prepare to welcome our guests to Lagos, we pray for their safe travels and look forward to a resounding celebration of Nigeria’s progress under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope vision,” the statement concluded.
