The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the death of three suspected kidnappers following a gunfight along the Ughelli-Patani Road on Tuesday. The operation was carried out by officers of the CP-Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT), led by ASP Robinson Julius, under the directive of Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda.

The encounter occurred at Ewhereni Junction when operatives on covert patrol intercepted a shuttle bus. The occupants, suspected to be criminals, opened fire on the police in a desperate attempt to flee, prompting a shootout. Three suspects sustained critical injuries and were later confirmed dead at the hospital. Others managed to escape.

An AK-47 rifle loaded with 18 live rounds was recovered from the scene.

In a separate operation, the CP-SAT team made more breakthroughs in the fight against kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related crimes across the state.

On May 24, operatives apprehended a notorious suspect identified as Ifeanyi Okolie, popularly known as “Black Jesus,” who had been linked to a series of motorcycle robberies in Asaba and surrounding areas. During interrogation, he led officers to a forested location where they recovered three locally made guns, four live cartridges, and a suspected stolen motorcycle.

Further investigation led to the arrest of three accomplices: Ogochukwu Emmanuel, Joseph Egwu, and Yakubu Yusuf. A Beretta pistol was also recovered from another suspect, known by the alias “Nino,” who is currently on the run.

Commending the team's efforts, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda lauded the CP-SAT operatives for their swift and strategic response to criminal threats in the state.

> “These successes underscore the Command’s unwavering commitment to rooting out crime and ensuring the safety of all Delta residents,” he said. “The professionalism and bravery demonstrated by our operatives in these operations are highly commendable.”

The Commissioner reaffirmed the command’s dedication to maintaining law and order and called on members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities using official police hotlines.

Investigations into the incidents are ongoing.
