TikTok Influencer Murja Kunya Sentenced to 6 Months in Prison for Naira Abuse

Popular TikTok influencer Murja Ibrahim Kunya has been sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to the abuse of the Nigerian currency.

Kunya, who was initially arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in January 2025 and granted administrative bail, failed to appear in court when required. Following weeks of surveillance, EFCC operatives re-arrested her on Sunday, March 16, 2025.

She was arraigned on May 20, 2025, where she pleaded guilty to an amended one-count charge.

According to the EFCC, the charge stemmed from an incident that occurred on December 28, 2023, at Tahir Guest Palace, Kano, where Kunya was seen dancing and spraying and trampling on naira notes, an act considered a violation of Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.

During the court session, EFCC prosecutor Musa Isah presented the facts of the case and urged the court to deliver a conviction in line with her guilty plea.

In his ruling on Wednesday, Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Amobeda sentenced Kunya to six months’ imprisonment with an option of a ₦50,000 fine.

In a unique twist, the court also directed that Kunya be appointed a social media ambassador for both the EFCC and the Central Bank of Nigeria. As part of her role, she will use her social media platforms to raise awareness about the proper handling of the naira and educate her followers on the legal consequences of currency abuse.

“This ruling serves both as punishment and a lesson. The influencer will now help amplify the message of financial discipline and respect for the naira,” the EFCC noted.
