Legendary Kenyan author and literary figure, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, has passed away. His daughter, Wanjiku wa Thiong’o, shared the news in an emotional post on her official Facebook page on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our dad, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, this Wednesday morning,” she wrote. “He lived a full life and fought a good fight. As he wished, let’s celebrate his life and legacy.”
The family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support, noting that Nducu wa Ngugi, the family’s spokesperson, will soon release details about the planned celebration of his life.
Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o was a towering figure in African literature — known for his profound contributions to post-colonial literature, his commitment to writing in African languages, and his unwavering advocacy for cultural and political freedom. His voice reshaped African narratives across generations.
