FG Reaches 6 Million Nigerians in Six Months Through Cash Transfer Programme – Minister

The Federal Government has scaled up its social support initiative, reaching six million Nigerians in just six months through the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) scheme. This was disclosed by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, during an event in Jos, Plateau State, where he addressed participants of the Skills-to-Wealth (S2W) training programme.
Highlighting the progress made under the current administration, Yilwatda noted that only two million people benefited from the programme over the past nine years, averaging just 200,000 annually.
“In contrast, this administration has reached six million beneficiaries in six months — that’s one million people every month,” he said.
To enhance transparency and efficiency, the ministry has introduced several reforms, including the digitisation of the National Social Register. Beneficiaries are now being assigned digital identities, e-wallet accounts, and undergo physical verification,
“We have cleaned up the social register by removing unverifiable names and households,” the minister explained.
Prof. Yilwatda also revealed that President Bola Tinubu has mandated the ministry to expand the programme to 15 million households by October.
“The President has made it clear: this support must reach the people within nine months,” he added.
To ensure accountability, the ministry invited the World Bank to conduct an independent verification of the beneficiaries. According to Yilwatda, the World Bank’s team was able to physically verify 96% of recipients, with the remaining 4% untraceable due to relocation or insecurity in some regions.
